PotsdamProPotsdam - Special building programme

What is inspiring?

The Potsdam special building programme (“Sonderbauprogramm ProPotsdam”) makes apartments available in 8 different areas for people who would otherwise not be able to access housing in the free market. The programme is designed to support all people in need and is part of an additional effort to guarantee that refugee families and individuals can have a long term perspective living in dignity.

How does it operate?

The Potsdam administration signed a general contract as a tenant of the ProPotsdam company. This arrangement ensures that rents will not fluctuate with rising rent prices for at least 30 years. The special construction programme will deliver around 400 new apartments in 8 different areas within the municipality between 2023 and 2025.

Who initiated the project? How?

The Potsdam administration commissioned the special building programme to ProPotsdam in order to achieve the goal of creating around 400 new apartments in the time frame of only 2 years. ProPotsdam is a public group of ten companies committed to the creation and management of affordable housing with a special interest in the integration of migrants and vulnerable people in the Brandenburg capital. The municipality serves as a general tenant securing affordable rents to the most vulnerable of the city’s inhabitants with a strong focus on refugees.

What is the outcome?

The first modular building block with 21 units has been delivered at the end of 2023, another two blocks with 50 apartments are to be delivered in 2024 and the remaining 6 areas will see its new apartment blocks until 2025. Potsdam’s efforts of providing urgently needed apartments are being carried out in relatively short notice. The focus is the creation of social housing guaranteeing a stable home for the most vulnerable people in the city.
